The aquarist world is often criticized when it comes to animal protection or ecology, and this activity is regularly accused of destroying wild populations through overfishing or the destruction of natural environments. This has often been the case in the past and there is still room for improvement throughout the sector.

On the other hand, it is systematically forgotten that this activity is a veritable network for the conservation of strains, populations, or species, subspecies or locality, but totally untapped. Indeed, a large number of individuals, more or less thematic regional or national associations, more or less specialized forums maintain and reproduce a large number of different species over the long term.

It should be understood that for a very long time, most of the time, amateur breeders have developed an ecological conscience and that a significant number of them are trying to adopt a reasoned management of the resource. There are currently maintained species in the network which turn out to have completely disappeared from their natural environment.

This state of affairs is absolutely not exploited for the aspects of more global conservation. It is high time to restore the fundamentally naturalistic dimension to this activity which has become commercial but which originally arose out of scientific curiosity towards biology in general.
